revelating genesis
An exploration of the co-opting of Christian narratives to uphold white-supremacy through the study of monstrosity.
the holy guide
the garden
In Genesis, the Lord creates humans in the Garden of Eden. He tells them not to eat the Fruit of Knowledge of Good & Evil, les they become like gods. Some figures in the bottom panel shield their eyes & flee from the knowledge. Others eat the fruit & become radiant with enlightenment - depicted as horns growing from their face (referencing the antisemetic translation of Exodus where Moses descends Mt. Sinai with horns after speaking with the Lord).
famine - reagan
Through trickle-down economics, anti-education policy, & the “War on Drugs” Reagan starved Americans of their basic needs, education, & humanity. The prison boom under his administration catapulted the growth of the Prison Industrial Complex we suffer under today.
The tower
The “paradise” in the top panel appears to be a kingdom in the clouds. Looking closer, however, we see that it is a tower submerged in foggy waters, and the arched doorway is really an open mouth. The wool-cloaked figures march forward like lambs to slaughter, feeding the machine they believe will eventually reward them, but their proximity to power will not save them from being consumed.
conquest - elizabeth ii
Not only is Elizabeth II the head of an imperial power that exploits various Black & brown countries, but she also uses those colonial footholds to enact violence through subordinates. Here she lets an arrow fly from her bow, impaling a figure across the field.
war - jimmy fallon
Though Fallon is a self-proclaimed apolitical, his comedy regularly covers political topics. Because of the uncritical lens through which he engages with guests, he is able to subliminally push the white-supremacist ideal of willful ignorance of others’ suffering.
death - santa claus
“Death” here is literal & represents surveillance/policing. Pop culture’s Santa is omniscient, objectively determining children’s moral quality based on vague criteria (often related to whether they trust his jdugment). Raising children to believe this myth grooms them to accept hyper-surveillance & uninformed obedience.
